This week was another short week. Thanks to all of the parents who were able to come in and chat with me at the Parent Teacher Interviews! If you were unable to make it on Thursday, please email me, and we can set up a time for you to come in and chat quickly about your child's progress so far this year. We continued working on decimals in Math, had our first few Informational Writing lessons, and continued with our Electricity and Simple Machines Science units.
Next week, our grade 5s are going to the Galt museum on Wednesday (the 28th). We will have a Science Quiz on Thursday (both grades), and we'll be writing two more Informational books in Writers' Workshop. We're introducing fractions in Math, and we'll begin learning the french names for colours! Finally, we have Mustache Day on Friday. Reminders for next week:
Thanks for reading! Mr. V

Well, it looks like I missed another week. Things have gotten busy around here! We finished our social units, began our new Science units (Wheels and Levers, and Electricity and Magnetism), began a new writing unit (Information writing!), a new Math unit (Decimals and Fractions), started Badminton in Gym, and still managed to spend some time reading and working on art projects. We also had Rock Your Mocs on Thursday, and were treated to some amazing traditional dances, organized by our school FNMI liaison.
This coming week is another short one (Thursday and Friday are off) and I'm looking forward to meeting with parents on Thursday! We don't have too much out of the ordinary going on during the week, but make sure to check the lost and found items in the hallway by the gym throughout the week. All items not claimed after parent teacher interviews will be donated! Things to remember: - Parent Teacher interviews on Thursday - No school on Thursday and Friday Thanks for reading! Mr. V This week, we were quite busy. We started our final projects in Social, wrote a quiz in Math, and are winding down our first Writers' Workshop unit. We also had our Halloween Party on Wednesday, and filmed the performance for the CBC competition!
Next week, we will finish our writing and social units. We'll spend some time working on our Remembrance Day projects. We also have our Royal Tyrrell Museum webcast "field trip" on Wednesday (from the comfort of our own classroom) and an Extended Recess on Thursday (a reward from Dragon Days). Finally, on Friday evening, sign ups for Parent Teacher Interviews open (see the school newsletter for details. Things to remember for next week: - picture retakes on Tuesday - Interview sign-ups Friday night Have a great weekend! Mr. V A little late posting again (oops!) but here is last week's classroom blog: Last week was our first full week back in a while. The grade 4s had a field trip on Monday (to the Lethbridge Landfill!) and the grade 5s continued our Kids in the Know health lessons. We tackled Mental Math (estimation), and continued working on Addition and Subtraction.
This week we have our Halloween Party on Wednesday, and a math quiz on Thursday (on Addition, Subtraction, and Mental Math). Lunch on the Go is also on Thursday. Things to remember for this week: - bring a costume on Wednesday so you can wear it for the party! - review adding, subtracting, and Mental Math for the quiz - Lunch on the Go (Little Caesar's pizza) on Thursday Thanks for reading! Mr. V Well, even I can't be perfect. Looks like I forgot to blog last week!
We had a great couple of weeks, and enjoyed some extra time off. We started our Addition and Subtraction unit in Math, and we've begun our first Social unit (studying Regions and First Peoples of Alberta [grade 4] and Canada [grade 5]). This week, we are focusing on Mental Math, and preparing for our Quiz next week. We'll be finishing the first part of our Social units so that we can move on to the Poster Projects! As well, unfortunately, our class photo did not turn out well (apparently there was some equipment malfunction) so we have been invited to have a new picture taken on Tuesday. Reminders for the week: - dress nice on Tuesday for class picture Also, as per the note sent home last week, the money raised through our annual Dragon Days fundraiser has been significantly lower than previous years. As it stands, the parent council will not have enough money to fund things like Scientists in Schools, which they have traditionally funded for our classes. The fundraiser has been extended to Friday Oct 26. Thank you so much to those of you who have already pitched in to raise money for our school! Mr. V Wow! A whole month has gone by. Thank you to those of you who I've had the chance to talk to already. If I haven't contacted you yet, I'll do my best to do so next week.
In the month of October, we have a few things coming up: our school's big fundraiser, the Dragon Days donation drive, is on until the end of next week; our Grade 4s have their first Galt Museum field trip on Wednesday when we come back, and they will be visiting the Lethbridge Landfill on the 22nd. Things to remember for next week:
Have a great Thanksgiving weekend! Mr. V ... and that's it for September!
We've had a busy first few weeks of school! We're now almost finished our first Science units, we've wrapped up the first part of our first math unit, and we're diving into drafting our first stories of the year! This week we had our first fire drill, as well as the Terry Fox Run. We managed to raise over $1250, so Mr. Firth had his beard dyed! Next week we have Lunch on the Go (on Thursday). Mr. V won't be here on Tuesday, so there will be a substitute. We also have a math quiz on Thursday. The quiz will include: comparing numbers (greater than/less than) and showing numbers in different forms (standard form: 2018, expanded form: 2000+10+8, and word form: two thousand eighteen), as well as showing numbers with base ten blocks. Reminders for the week:
Finally, now that we're through the first week, I'll start making my beginning of year phone calls. I'm hoping to touch base with everyone in the next week or two for a quick 5 minute chat about how the year is going so far. If you have a busy schedule and it's tough to get ahold of you, I would really appreciate a quick email ([email protected]) letting me know when you might be available. Thanks so much for reading! Mr. V This week we began our first full science units (Waste and Our World, and Wetland Ecosystems), started looking at developing believable characters in Writers' Workshop, and focused on Expanded Form in Math. We had our Bus Evacuation practice on Thursday, as well as a visit from award-winning author Faith Hicks. On Friday we had our first Kids in the Know lesson, reviewing the 7 root strategies.
Next week we'll move on to comparing numbers in Math. We'll continue working on characters in Writing, and we'll continue on with the same Science units. Reminders for next week: - Individual Pictures are on Tuesday - Terry Fox walk/run is on Wednesday Also a heads up, Orange Shirt day will be held Oct. 1 in our district. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Thanks for reading! Mr. V Our made it through our first full week! We had a busy time. We dove into our Writers' Workshop, and explored how to find story ideas. We did a book tasting, sorted into groups, got started on our Reading Clubs. We started doing our Math station rotations. We even got started on our Introduction to Science!
Next week, we start exploring Place Value and Expanded Form in math, and we're starting our first full units in Science (Waste in our World, and Wetlands and Ecosystems). Reminders for next week: - Please fill out and send in the Volunteer Sign-up sheet - Our first Kids in the Know health lesson will be next Friday Thanks for reading! Mr. V Wow! Our first week is done. We spent a lot of time getting to know each other, and readjusting to "school mode". We got started on reading and writing, and got used to choosing successful spots for work. Next week we are diving headfirst into most of our subjects, including our first Math unit (Whole Numbers), and our introduction to Science!
