Aaaaaand just like that, there are only 9 days of school left.
Some notes for next week: > Monday is a regular day > On Tuesday, we need to be here by 7:30am so that we can leave on time for our Waterton field trip! > Friday is National Aboriginal Day; we'll have some special activities during the morning Class Work We spent some time this week doing "Year in Review" quizzes. We did one each in Science and Math, checking back on the concepts that we covered throughout the entire year to see what we remembered. We also did a year end Personal Growth self-evaluation. We had Aggie Days on Tuesday, which was a ton of fun! There were plenty of new activities this year, and it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves. We also continued working on our Area and Perimeter Theme Park projects in Math. Waterton Field Trip **An important note: our field trip is outside, so it is weather dependent. We are keeping a close eye on the forecast, but if it is going to be miserable we won't be able to go -- we are looking into a back-up plan in case this happens** We will be leaving the school at 8am SHARP, so we are asking everyone to be here by 7:30am to get sorted out and make sure that we have everyone. Please do not be late as we cannot hold the busses. Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend! Mr. V

Good afternoon!
Well, we're in June. Just a few more weeks until Summer - I know we're all enjoying the warmer weather! Some notes for next week: > Mr. V is away on Monday > Dress like a Superhero day is Tuesday (to line up with Aggie Days) not Monday, although some classes will likely dress up for both days, so you're welcome to if you want to! > Aggie Days is Tuesday afternoon for our class. Remember to wear good shoes and dress for the weather! The forecast is currently calling for it to be sunny, so sunscreen may be a good idea. > LOTG is on Tuesday as well for those who have ordered it > A reminder that I'm still missing a few Waterton field trip forms, so if you haven't brought it back yet, please do so ASAP. Class Work: Writing: we're learning about writing Comic Books. We learned that comic book writers don't just start drawing pictures: they plan out the story and write a script with descriptions, dialogue, and ideas of how the page will be laid out. We're also writing paragraphs most days to practice organizing information, giving details, and separating ideas into complete sentences. Math: we're working on Theme Park designs. This project is designed to utilize the students' knowledge of area and perimeter, as well as problem solving skills to fit all of the necessary components into the limited space. We're also continuing to do a word problem every week. Reading: we're finishing up our class read-aloud, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairlyand in a Ship of Her Own Making. We're also spending plenty of time reading books of the students' choosing, inside and outside. I'm also super excited for everyone to get a chance to read each other's Camp NaNoWriMo stories as they will be joining out class library this week! Science/Social: we've pretty much finished up with our Science and Social units for the year. Our Waterton field trip in a couple weeks will touch on various aspects of these curriculums (such as identity, National Parks, plants, and Albertan/Canadian culture). Thanks for reading! Mr. V In the last month...
We tackled opinion writing, learning how to state our opinion and use compelling reasons to try to convince our readers to agree with us. We've now moved on to our second Narrative writing unit, in Camp NaNoWriMo. We had our Film Study unit. We finished Division and began working on Patterns. We finished our Social units, and our Science units (Plants and Weather). We've had two (2!) practicum students in our class (one from the University and one from the college). We started (and finished) our One District One Book event. We had our Science and Heritage Fair, book fair, and celebration of learning. Coming up, Grade 5 options forms are due on Monday, we have Grade 5 Scientists in Schools on Tuesday, as well as Student Vote, our Easter party is on Thursday, there is no school on Friday, and Easter Break goes from April 19-28. We will be continuing our Camp NaNoWriMo story writing unit into May. We'll be continuing Patterns in math, and then spend most of the rest of the year reviewing and extending the concepts we have covered. We have one more Science unit each (Lights & Shadows, and Chemistry), and one more Social unit (on Identity). We'll be finishing up our Kids in the Know units as well as our Healthy Eating unit. We also have a number of field trips coming up, so please keep an eye out for notes home about that! Thanks for reading, Mr. V It has been some times since I've managed to put up a classroom blog.
A few highlights from the last few weeks: finished up Information Writing, started Opinion writing; kept working hard on Division (wrote our quiz this week); finished our Science units, began new Social units (grade 5s had a trip to the Galt museum and a visit from Mr. Stout to talk about good questions); Grade 4s had Scientists in Schools to prep for our new unit (plants); we had Carnaval (waaaaay back in Feb) and Mme. Babin came to visit; the Alberta Opera put on a fantastic performance of Pinocchio; we've started floor hockey in Gym; the Gilbert Patterson Grade 8 and Select choirs came to visit us; Scotlynn (Mr. V's baby!) came to say, "hi!"; Report Card #2 went home today. Next week we will be... continuing Opinion writing; working on our Pixar Film Study unit; reviewing our Division quizzes; finishing up our Social units; inviting parents to Celebration of Learning/Parent-Teacher interviews on Thursday afternoon/evening (*so no school in the PM); having our English Book Fair in the Learning Commons; having our Science and Heritage Fair in the gym; having no school on Friday. Whew! Thanks for reading, Mr. V Hello!
This week, we introduced Division in math. We started the final section of our Informational Writing unit, and we started the second half of our Science units. We learned to pronounce the months of the year in French (as well as how to pronounce dates - ask them how to say their birthday in French!), and we started working towards taking gratitude more seriously. This coming week, we will wrap up this Science unit, dive further into Division, and we will finish Information Writing! We have the Alberta Opera on Wednesday, and LOTG on Thursday. A reminder that students may ask to re-take the multiplication quiz if they have been studying it and feel that they can do better than they did on their Quiz #1. Thanks for reading! Mr. V This week we wrapped up the second "bend" in our Informational Writing Unit, this portion of our Social Studies unit, and our Multiplication Focus in Math. We had our Human Sexuality health lessons, and our Grade 5s began Grade 5 Basketball.
Next week, we'll begin our 3rd and final "bend" in Informational Writing. We'll jump back into Science (Building Devices that Move, and Mechanisms Using Electricity), and we'll start working on Division in Math. AND! Big announcement. We will be having an Ed 2500 student from the University of Lethbridge in our class for the next few months as part of their Practicum experience. They will be starting on Tuesday, observing the classroom and helping out as appropriate for this part of their learning experience. Reminders for Next Week: - Grade 5s, please bring in a shoebox - Return Multiplication Quizzes [signed] Thanks for reading! Mr. V Last week was fun, but busy. We finished our Klimt Tree of Life paintings in art. We continued learning about Nutrients in Health, and the Fur trade in Social. We started our reading groups back up, and started writing Informational Chapter books in Writers' Workshop. In Math we learned several strategies for doing Multiplication. I don't need to students to know all of the strategies -- just one, that they can use efficiently to get the correct answer. We also had the Munsch-o-rama play from New West Theatre on Friday.
This week we will finish up this section of our Social Unit. We'll have a Multiplication Check-in Quiz on Thursday. We also have the Human Sexuality lessons on Tuesday and Thursday. Thanks for reading! Mr. V Welcome Back!
I hope that everyone had an excellent break! We had a great first week back. We took it pretty easy, reviewing what we've learned so far in Math, and rebuilding some habits and expectations. In Writers' Workshop, we celebrated the first section of our Informational Writing unit with TED Talk style presentations of the students' writing pieces. These presentations were very well received, and it was cool to see what the they had to teach each other. Thanks to everyone who chose to participate! Next week we will be continuing on with the next section of the Informational Writing unit. We will begin our dedicated Multiplication and Division unit, beginning with an overview of some of the different strategies that the students may choose to use. We will be continuing with the second half of the Social units we were working on before Christmas, and in Health we will begin learning about the different nutrients and what role they play in our health. Reminders for next week:
Thanks for reading, Mr. V Hello!
For the first week of December we took it a little easy. We continued working with Fractions and Decimals in math. We wrote a third! information book in Writers Workshop.
